Is ChatGPT a Search Engine? How ChatGPT Search Finds and Cites Pages
By Bibek Thapa · Published · 8 min read
Quick Answer
Partly. ChatGPT is an AI assistant, not a search engine in the classic sense. Its web search feature does behave like one: it sends rewritten queries to third-party search providers, surfaces sites crawled by OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, and answers with cited links. Without web search, ChatGPT answers from its training data and does not search anything.

Key Takeaways
- ChatGPT is an AI assistant with a web search tool; only that tool works like a search engine.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT search partners with other search providers and lists Microsoft among them.
- OpenAI does not name Google as a provider; reports that ChatGPT used Google results came from a 2025 news report.
- Sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links.
- In Anobee's two runs on 25 October 2026, ChatGPT cited only official documentation, not blog posts.
Is ChatGPT a search engine? Partly. ChatGPT is an AI assistant, and most of what it writes comes from its training data. It also has a web search tool, and that tool does work like a search engine. It sends rewritten queries to search providers, surfaces sites that OpenAI's crawler can reach, and answers with links to its sources [1]. So the honest answer depends on whether search was used for your question.
How Anobee checked this: we read OpenAI's own help and crawler documentation. Then we ran two questions through ChatGPT web search on 25 October 2026 (Free plan, temporary chat, Web search selected by hand) and recorded every cited URL. We also compared those runs with Anobee's earlier AI citation index and with anobee.com's GA4 data.
Is ChatGPT a search engine by the usual definition?
MDN defines a search engine as a software system that collects information from the web and presents it to people looking for something specific. It breaks the job into crawling, indexing and searching [4]. Google describes its own system in the same three stages: crawling, indexing and serving results [5].
Here is how ChatGPT with web search compares on each stage:
| Stage | Google Search | ChatGPT with web search |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | Google's crawlers download pages found on the web [5] | OAI-SearchBot crawls sites so they can appear in ChatGPT's search features [2] |
| Indexing | Stores page information in the Google index [5] | OpenAI does not publish how it stores crawled pages; it also uses third-party search providers [1] |
| Searching and ranking | Returns ranked results for a query [5] | Rewrites your prompt into one or more queries and ranks results using multiple factors, and does not promise any page a place [1] |
| What you get | A list of results | A written answer with inline citations and a Sources list [1] |
ChatGPT passes the crawling and searching parts. However, indexing is the gap. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" [1], so it does not rely only on an index of its own. The output is also different. A search engine hands you results to choose from. Instead, ChatGPT reads them and writes an answer.
The fairest description is the one ChatGPT gave in Anobee's first test run: an AI assistant with web search capabilities.
How does ChatGPT search the web?
ChatGPT may search on its own when a question needs current information. You can also start a search yourself from the tools menu by choosing Search, or by typing / in the message box [1]. In Anobee's Free account the option was labelled "Web search" under the + menu.
When a search runs, OpenAI describes these steps [1]:
- ChatGPT rewrites your question into one or more targeted search queries.
- Those queries go to search providers. After reading the first results, ChatGPT may send further, more specific queries.
- Your general location, worked out from your IP address, may be added to make local results more accurate. The IP address itself and your account details are not shared with the providers.
- The answer arrives with citations. Selecting Sources shows the cited pages and other relevant links.

For example, OpenAI says a question about drugs that target CCR8 might first become the query "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025" [1]. That is closer to how an SEO thinks about keywords than how people type into ChatGPT.
Web search is available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, and to people who are not signed in [1]. It launched for paid users on 31 October 2024. Then it opened to everyone, without signup, on 5 February 2025 [3].
What search engine does ChatGPT use?
OpenAI does not name one search engine. Its help page says ChatGPT search partners with other search providers when needed. For how those providers handle queries, it points to two privacy policies: the Microsoft privacy statement and the Shopify privacy policy [1]. Earlier, the 2024 launch post said ChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers" plus content supplied directly by OpenAI's partners. Those partners include news and data providers for weather, stocks, sports and maps [3].
So the documented picture has three parts:
- Third-party search providers. Microsoft is the one OpenAI's help page points to, through its privacy statement.
- Partner content. Data and news supplied directly by partners.
- OpenAI's own crawler. OAI-SearchBot, which decides whether a site can be shown in ChatGPT search answers [2].
This mix is why "is ChatGPT a search engine" has no clean yes or no. Part of the searching is done by other companies' engines, and ChatGPT's job is to read the results and write the answer.

Does ChatGPT use Google search?
OpenAI's documentation does not list Google as a search provider [1]. Instead, the idea comes from news reporting. In August 2025, Tom's Guide summarised a report by The Information. It said OpenAI had used Google results scraped through SerpApi, a third-party service, for some real-time questions about news, sports and markets [6]. OpenAI has not confirmed this in its help documentation. Treat it as a reported claim, not a documented feature.
The same article quotes court testimony from OpenAI's Nick Turley about the goal of serving about 80% of traffic from OpenAI's "own first-party index" [6]. So OpenAI is building its own index over time. Still, the quote suggests that much of the work then depended on outside providers.
How ChatGPT search finds and cites pages
For site owners, the most useful part of OpenAI's documentation is the crawler page. OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs [2]:
| OpenAI bot | What it does | What blocking it means |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features | Your site is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may be used to train foundation models | Your content should not be used for model training; search is not affected |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a user's request needs it | Not used to decide whether content appears in search |
OpenAI notes that a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. It also publishes IP ranges for each bot [2]. The help center adds that your host or content delivery network must allow traffic from those searchbot IP addresses [1]. A Cloudflare rule can block ChatGPT search even when robots.txt allows it.
Anobee's robots.txt allows all crawlers apart from its internal /search/ path, so OAI-SearchBot can reach every article.
Once a page is eligible, ChatGPT ranks results using "multiple factors" meant to surface relevant, reliable information. OpenAI does not promise any page a place [1]. When ChatGPT links to a page, it adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the URL. Every link in both of Anobee's test runs carried that tag. As a result, ChatGPT visits show up in analytics as their own source.
The practical steps for earning those citations are covered in Anobee's guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT.
What Anobee's tests showed
Two ChatGPT runs on 25 October 2026
| Prompt | Opening of the answer | Cited sources |
|---|---|---|
| Is ChatGPT a search engine? Cite the sources you use. | "Yes, ChatGPT can function as a search engine, but it is more accurately described as an AI assistant with web-search capabilities." | OpenAI's web search help page, OpenAI's ChatGPT search launch post, Google's How Search works guide, MDN's search engine definition |
| What search engine does ChatGPT use? Cite the sources you use. | "ChatGPT does not rely on just one publicly confirmed search engine." | OpenAI's web search help page (cited twice) and the launch post |
Both answers were accurate on the points we could check against OpenAI's documentation. Neither cited a blog post. The pages that rank in Google for "is ChatGPT a search engine", from WePC, GeeksforGeeks, HubSpot and Tech.co, did not appear. In other words, for a question about its own product, ChatGPT went straight to primary documentation. The second answer called Bing "a documented part of ChatGPT's search history" and did not mention the SerpApi reporting at all.
Two runs are a small sample. ChatGPT can give different sources to the same prompt on another day, so read this as a snapshot, not a rule.
Anobee's AI citation index
The third AI citation index run asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the same branded prompt. ChatGPT cited anobee.com in all three runs, with 6, 7 and 6 Anobee URLs. Yet only three pages appeared every time: About, the SEO hub and the guide to checking AI citations. A steady "yes, it cited us" result hid a lot of change in which pages were picked.
What anobee.com's analytics show
GA4 groups ChatGPT visits under the AI Assistant channel. From 27 September to 24 October 2026, that channel sent 29 sessions to anobee.com. Of those, 26 came from chatgpt.com. Organic search sent 106 sessions over the same period. Of the 26 ChatGPT sessions, 18 landed on Anobee's guide to earning online in Nepal and 5 on its keyword research tools comparison.
In short, ChatGPT is a real but small traffic source for Anobee. It sends people to specific, practical pages rather than the homepage.
Is ChatGPT a search engine worth optimizing for?
For most sites, yes, as long as the basics are in place. Three checks come first:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your CDN or firewall rules [2].
- Decide on GPTBot separately. Blocking training does not remove you from ChatGPT search [2].
- Track
utm_source=chatgpt.comvisits in your analytics, and check which pages ChatGPT cites for your key questions.
Also, classic SEO still matters, since ChatGPT search works with search providers [1]. How SEO, generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) overlap is explained in SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT search free?
Yes. OpenAI says web search is available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and to people who are not signed in. Searches count toward your plan's usage limits.
Does ChatGPT search use Bing?
OpenAI does not name a single search engine. Its help page says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and points readers to the Microsoft privacy statement and the Shopify privacy policy for how those providers process queries.
Can ChatGPT replace Google?
For questions that need a written explanation with a few sources, ChatGPT search can save time. For browsing many results, local listings, or checking a page yourself, a search engine is still more direct. OpenAI also warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
Can I block ChatGPT from training on my site but still appear in ChatGPT search?
Yes. OpenAI uses separate crawlers. Disallow GPTBot to keep content out of model training, and allow OAI-SearchBot so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers.
