Cookies and consent

Cookie Policy

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser so it can remember something between page loads. This page lists the cookies used on anobee.com, who sets them, what they are for, and how you can change your mind at any time.

Cookie categories

What is set, and when

Only the strictly necessary cookies are set when you arrive. Everything else waits for your consent. If you decline, the advertising and analytics scripts are never loaded, so their cookies are never created.

Strictly necessary

No consent required

These keep the site working and remember the choice you made in the consent banner, so we do not have to ask again on every page. Without them the site cannot function or cannot respect your privacy choice.

Examples: Consent preference cookie (anobee_consent, stored for 6 months), plus any short-lived cookies our host sets for security and load balancing.

Advertising

Set only after consent

Google AdSense and its partners use these to choose which ads to show, to limit how often you see the same ad, and to detect invalid clicks. They are what make the free content on this site possible.

Examples: Google cookies such as __gads, __gpi, IDE, and NID, set by Google on its own domains for up to 13 months. Google documents the full list and their durations.

Analytics

Set only after consent

If analytics is enabled, these tell us which articles get read, which ones people leave quickly, and where readers come from. We look at these in aggregate to decide what to write and what to fix.

Examples: Measurement cookies set by the analytics provider, typically expiring within 24 months.

Embedded content

Set only after consent

Some articles embed third-party content such as videos. When you load one, that provider may set its own cookies, exactly as if you had visited their site directly.

Examples: Cookies set by the embedding provider under its own cookie policy.

Advertising cookies

Google AdSense

Anobee is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites. These cookies are set on Google’s own domains, not on anobee.com, and we cannot read them.

You can turn off personalised advertising in Google Ads Settings, opt out of many vendors at once at aboutads.info/choices, and read the current list of Google’s advertising cookies on Google’s ad cookies page. Turning off personalisation does not remove ads; it only stops them being tailored to you.

Your control

Changing or withdrawing consent

When you first visit from the EEA or the UK, a consent banner asks whether non-essential cookies may be used. Nothing beyond the strictly necessary cookies is loaded until you answer.

To change your answer later, use the cookie settings link in the site footer. Withdrawing consent stops the scripts from loading on your next page view.

You can also clear or block cookies in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies means we cannot remember your consent choice, so the banner will appear again on every visit.
